Shakpak-Ata Underground Mosque

The Shakpak-Ata Underground Mosque is an architectural monument of the 10th–13th centuries, one of the oldest and most unique underground mosques of Mangystau.

The mosque was carved into a rock formed by the beds of two ravines descending from Mount Ungazy to the Sarytas Bay.

The interior layout is cruciform, with a central hall topped by a domed vault. In the middle of the hall there is a circular opening leading to the mountain’s surface. The four corners of the square central hall are decorated with semi-columns.

The mosque has two entrances opposite each other: one on the vertical cliff of the mountain and another leading to the top of the mountain. Niches in the walls were used for lamps and books, as in the Middle Ages the mosque served as a place of prayer and teaching for Sufi ascetics.

The walls of the mosque, both inside and outside, are covered with carved drawings and inscriptions. Many of the inscriptions are Sufi sayings in poetic form, glorifying the Creator.
