Tuzbair

Tuzbair — offers breathtaking landscapes: snow-white salt flats and limestone mountains against the backdrop of the blue sky and yellowish-brown soil.

The terrain is diverse and impressive even for experienced travelers: rocky cliffs, wind-carved buttes, salt flats, and steppe. It’s worth staying at least a full day to watch the scenery in different lighting — soft in the morning, bright in the afternoon, golden at sunset, and under the starlit sky.
The main attraction of Tuzbair is the salt flat of the same name. In Kazakh, it is called “sor,” meaning a type of salt marsh that has no outlet and is shallow. Such salt flats form in depressions no deeper than one and a half meters. During spring melt, the flat is covered with water, beautifully reflecting the sky. In summer, the crust hardens, making it possible to walk freely — though sometimes your feet may sink 10–15 cm into the salt deposits.

The Tuzbair salt flat stretches for 6 km. Another highlight of the area is a natural chalk arch located by the salt flat. Photographers wait by the arch all day long to capture it framed by the rays of the sun.
